Unfortunately that stuff happens. As for the cost to fix an out of warranty
radio, it depends on where you send it and what's wrong. Some shops are
cheaper than others and sending to the manufacturer like taking your car to
the dealer, not always the best choice. I've sent a couple radios in over
the years and doing homework, it would be out of budget now but usually the
prices aren't horrible and most of today's radios are reliable enough so you
don't have problems with them very often. When they're 30 years or if
they'll go that far who knows, I'll let everyone know in 23 more years if my
TS-2000 makes it to 30 years.
