My update history is full of things called "Security Update for Windows
RT 8.1" that have been downloading and installing as they please. But
the only thing just named "Update for Windows RT 8.1" is listed as
having Failed on Feb 16, and if it has been retried since, I'm not
seeing it. "Check now" says there are no updates for me, but it's not
inspiring much confidence...

Greetings--
I can only wonder if this is 'initial fall-out' from MS's decision to
make continuing patches and updates available only if the Windows 8.1
Update is applied to one's OS (seemingly assumed to be Windows 8.1).
Here's a quote from one of several media reports on MS's update
'situation':
"Microsoft pushes back Windows 8.1 Update deadline by another month
Summary: Microsoft is giving consumers running Windows 8.1 an extra 30
days to install Windows 8.1 Update.

Microsoft is giving consumers another 30 days beyond its originally
stated deadline to install Windows 8.1 Update.
windowsfutures
Instead of requiring Windows 8.1 users to install the update by May 13,
which is this month's Patch Tuesday, Microsoft is now allowing them a
longer grace period — until June 10 — to move to the Update in order
to continue to receive patches and fixes from the company. Microsoft
announced the Windows 8.1 Update deadline extension on May 12."
I don't know if this applies to Tablets or other devices running Windows
8.0, but I suspect it might, since there has been an update to 8.1 along
the lines of a Service Pack. I had updated my daughter's laptop to
Windows 8.1 PRO x64 before she moved 3000 miles away (U.S. Navy
requirement), and she now needs to apply this 7-file set of
patches/updates in order to keep her laptop patched and secure. To help
her out, I put all of the files on a thumb drive and printed out
instructions for her. With a tablet (Surface RT), your situation may be
different.
HTH.

Subject: [PCBUILD] Windows Update settings (8.1)
I got a deal a while back on a refurbished Surface RT, in order to
start trying out Win 8. It has been merrily auto-updating, but when I
try "Check Now" it usually fails with one of Microsoft's unhelpful
messages...
I'd like to change it to "Notify me, but let me choose when to
install", and it looks from the Help pages like this option is still
available. But none of the listed procedures to get to the Windows
Update Settings page actually seems to work for me, whether by getting
to Windows Update and then Change PC Settings, or by going to Settings
and then Update & Restore.
Can anyone offer the clue I must be missing?
