I used a MC-60 for a while. The battery only operates the pre-amp. If you
don't have a battery in it, the mic works just fine. The pre-amp really
isn't necessary. In fact, it is more detrimental than an asset. There was a
time when everyone, especially CB ops, thought they had to have a pre-amp to
pump up the volume to max the power, and all it did, in most cases, is
distort the signal and splatter all over the place.  ,
