These are excellent alternatives.  Before I explore them further, however, I
wonder if anyone makes some sort of a DTMF keypad (like an external numeric
number pad you might use with a laptop) that would plug into one of the
TS-2000's AUX jacks?

you need a DTMF mike, or one of those old DTMF dialers to hold up to your
mike...but of course those don't have the 4 A, B, C or D keys on them if you
need those to access anything on the node.
You can program DTMF strings into memory locations on the ts2000, but these
unfortunately are one of the few things that is totally inaccessible...IE<
no speech feed back of any kind to allow you to program dtmf codes.
That said, you can simply use the keypad on your cell phone or land line and
hold the speaker up to the microphone while keying the radio...and again, as
long as you don't need any of the 4 alphabet functions, you will be able to
bring up the nodes just fine.
Just hold the radio mike close to the speaker where the touch tones come out
of your phone and dial the code you want while holding down the ptt...I've
done this on lots of radios that didn't have a dtmf pad to access IRLP.

Basically, suppose I am on a 2M repeater, correctly using it with its PL
tones, how then do I enter DTMF tones to bring-up a particular EchoLink
node?  Note that this question is not about the repeater's PL tone.  It is
about how to enter tones on the rig's numeric number pad (I think) which
then cause the repeater to bring-up a particular EchoLink node.  Of course,
this relates to a repeater which in fact does have an EchoLink connection.
