 From the full left off position (9 o'clock), turn the big knob 3 clicks 
  clockwise.   That's the  resistance setting.   Now do 2 quick presses 
on the function button, which is the center of the 3 large buttons under 
the display.   Touch the probes together and you will get a solid beep.

Now go around your house and look for that elusive continuity.
