I can indeed use the VHF/UHF bands on the Main receiver including PL tones
with no problem.

Richard, let me suggest you try working vhf/uhf on the main VFO first, to
make sure you have that set up correctly. Then try using the subreceiver.
I'm pretty sure the subreceiver works as you specified, and I don't think
you need to press main first. But make sure you can setup the split and PL
tones on the main receiver first, then try it with the subreceiver.

Subject: Re: Operating the Kenwood TS-2000 Sub Receiver
Hi Jim!
Well, I seem to still be having some trouble. Some have said that if = all
I do is hit the right "Sub" arrow button all PTT and control will be =
switched to the Sub receiver. Seemingly, when I do just that, indeed I =
can hear and tune the Sub receiver - but I do not think I have PTT, PL =
tone, etc. control on the Sub receiver. I am reading the TS-2000 manual =
"Chapter 10 Sub-Receiver" and there is says:
"CONTROLLING THE SUB-RECEIVER
To control all the available functions of the sub- receiver, press [SUB] =
to transfer the controls and transmission capability to the = sub-receiver.
The "PTT" and "CTRL" icons move from the main transceiver = to the
sub-receiver. When you press [SEND] or the microphone PTT switch, = the
transceiver transmits on the SUB band frequency. Or, if you would = like to
transmit and receive on the MAIN band while adjusting the = sub-receiver
functions, simply press [CTRL]. Only the "CTRL" icon moves = from the main
transceiver display to the sub display. The "PTT" icon = remains on the main
transceiver display. With this setup, you can = continue receiving and
transmitting on the main transceiver VFO = frequencies while you are making
adjustments to the sub-receiver = functions."
Therefore, it *does* appear that the Sub right arrow button should do = what
I want. That is, the Sub right arrow button moves both PTT and = Control to
the Sub receiver; while using only the Control button toggles = only control
but not PTT functionality between the Main and Sub = receivers.
However, I also noticed that earlier within this same Chapter it says = the
following:
"TX BAND
Press [MAIN] to display the "PTT" and "CTRL'" icons on the MAIN band. = When
"PTT" is on the MAIN band display, the MAIN band is currently = selected as
the transmission band. You can use the MAIN band frequency = to transmit
signals or to control the main transceiver functions. If you = press [SUB],
the "PTT" and =EF=BF=BDCTRL" icons move to the SUB band = display. This
means that the SUB band is now selected as the = transmission band and
controls the functions. You can use the SUB band = frequency to transmit
signals or control the sub receiver functions."
In the first sentence from the foregoing, I wonder if that means that = you
must first press the left arrow button (Main) to bring-up the PTT = and
Control icons on the display *before* pressing the Sub right arrow = button
- and then press the right arrow button (Sub) to move both PTT = and Control
icons over to the Sub receiver?
I am still working to get this figured out. Shortly, I am going to =
belly-up to the rig and give it another try! I'll report back.
many thanks & 73,
Richard KK6MRH

One more thing I should have mentioned...
Let's say in my example you're on 20 meters and monitoring a repeater = with
the subreceiver. Now, a friend calls you on the repeater. To talk = to
your buddy, you'll need to switch the PTT Icon, that right arrow = button,
to the subreceiver before answering him/her on the repeater.

Richard, the purpose of the subreceiver is so that you can use the HF =
features of the 2000 and its VHF/UHF features simultaneously.
The subreceiver is turned on when you press the subreceiver volume =
control.
That knob has nothing to do with whether or not you're controling the =
subreceiver. Here are the subreceiver controls taken from the front = panel
key layout:
*LEFT ARROW. [Main] Left button n cursor pad. Main transceiver. = Transfers
transmit freq to main. OR, goes out of a submenu. N/A.
*RIGHT ARROW. [Sub] Right button in cursor pad. Transfers operating freq =
to sub transceiver. OR, Select a submenu when applicable in Menu Mode. =
N/A.
*CONTROL BUTTON. Round button bottom right of main tuning dial. Toggles =
operating control between main transceiver and sub receiver.`
For example, you might be working 20 meter HF and want to monitor a =
repeater, or a packet cluster. To do this, you'd want the PTT and = control
on the main receiver, except you'll first need to switch the = control to
the subreceiver to adjust it to the channel you wish to = monitor. You'll
also need to have the subreceiver activated with the = subreceiver's volume
knob.

Colin!
OMG! That's *so* simple. You are right - I have the Sub power button =
"on."
I'm going to go turn it "off" and try just using the left/right main/sub =
buttons.

Richard:
I find that you don't want to use the sub receiver control function. = This
function activates when you press the sub receiver volume control =
in...simply use the right and left keys in the diamond configuration to =
select which side of the radio you want to be on. The control function =
seems to confuse everything and make simple operation more difficult.
If you have activated the sub receiver control, simply press the sub =
receiver volume control once to exit that mode and then you can use the =
right and left buttons...
If you want to do a skype thing sometime just let me know and we can =
arrange a sked.

Subject: Operating the Kenwood TS-2000 Sub Receiver
Hi!
This question has to do with operating the Sub receiver - I think this = is
referred to as "PTT" and/or "Control" or something like that.
When I press the "Sub" button [right button in the four button diamond =
shaped cluster to the right of the main tuning dial] it moves me to the =
Sub receiver. Indeed, I can then hear, change frequencies thereon, = change
bands thereon and so on. However, I do not seem to have = "control"
(question) of the Sub receiver - like for changing PL tones = for a 2M
repeater.
I don't get it : ( What am I missing? From the manual, I understand = that
there is a difference between "PTT" and/or "Control", but I am = confused.
If I move over to the Sub receiver I would like PTT and PL = tone
functionality to be there also.
