I think that he may have changed the antenna but not sure. 
He runs about a KW SSB out of that old Heath, which I suspected was an oscillation getting into the signal due to the age of the tubes. 
The old Heaths are famous for parasitic suppressor break down, which could lead to tube failure. I never really asked him if he'd change out an antenna or feed line but he has been playing around with some antenna designs lately. I'm going to be testing out one this weekend, an 80/160M Alpha Delta sloper version. LOL 
So maybe one of those is causing a problem, not to mention he has put up another tower closer to his house. Seeing has how it was related to 40M only, and the other bands were perfect, suspected a component in the old amp 1ST.
