The magic in the 43 foot vertical, and 23 foot verticals are that they are
5/8 wave antennas for 20 and 40 meters. This is as long as you want a
vertical to be to have a low angle of radiation on a given frequency.
With a tuner at the bottom, and a radiator of equal length on the ground
side; the 43 foot vertical will work well on 80 through 20 meters.
The 23 foot version will work well on 40 through 10 meters.
Apparently, 43 feet will work on 80 just as well as a much harder to erect
62 foot full quarter wave vertical.
The same idea should work for inverted L or horizontal wires.
