the squelch setting determines how straong a signal must be above the background noise in order to open the squelch. it does not change the sensitivity of the receiver.  I left mine set on 9 because anything too weak to open it there is unlistenable anyway. i think this why so many commercial radios now omit the squelch control altogether as a user adjustment. Tooe weak to hold the squelch is almost always too we ark to copy under most real world portable or mobile operating conditions.
