Hi Pat,
Well, my understanding of the ts 440/ts 450 series is that the carrier level
control is needed for the AM, FM, and CW modes. As long as you are in SSB
there is no need for it, accept for the auto tuner. So, I will run the power
level up for tuning and then perhaps turn it down for SSB. Just my
experience.

For what it is worth, I always run my carrier pot all the way
counterclockwise. I'm not sure I understand its function. This is
with my old TS850. Back in the day, it was always important to get
rid of as much of that carrier as you could! Guess I'm trapped in the past.
