Jim,
If you are going to try AFSK which most people use today) you just need
a USB cable from pc to radio. You would also need to install the free
virtual comm driver from Kenwood which will give that USB connection a
comm port number.
All your audio in and out is then done via this USB connection.

hamradioandvision.com
Maybe some info there can point you in the right direction, so you don't
have to reinvent the wheel.
It would be pretty cool if your program could do something with digital
modes.
