Hi Steve!

Aaahhh . . . !  Must I key-down for the proper read of the SWR meter?  

You are correct.  I am told that the meter looks something like the scale
you describe below.  However, where exactly I am falling on that scale is
somewhat of a mystery right now ; )

Richard,

A few  things on your swr.  First the swr meter only works on HF and 6
meters, not on 2 or 440.

You need to press the "5" key on the front panel to toggle between the
various meter functions: SWR, Power, ALC, and also compression if it is
being used.

I really don't know what it looks like, but  hit the "5" key until the 
swr meter shows up and   key down in FSK, CW, or FM and see what 
appears.   There will be a line of dits that move across the scale  she 
  will probably see things like 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5 and so on.
