Bob,

I know this  is one of the real problems with these things.    If one of 
these gets bent in the  up position with an antenna on top, good luck 
getting it down safely.

On the other hand, towers aren't a viable option for a lot of hams for 
any number of reasons.   You pay your money and take your chances.
