Mike,
I know DX Engineering sells what they call "hot rods" to mount at the
top of Hustler verticals to improve low band performance. I guess a
top loaded vertical, and a inverted L are just 2 different animals.
A true inverted L for the low bands will be something like 30 or so
feet vertical and another 100 or so feet horizontal, and usually some
kind of matching thing at the base, along with a good radial system.
Sounds to me like the suggested mod for your vertical is to add top
loading, and not to really make an inverted l out of it. Either way,
it might make a usable antenna for you on 160.
