I *think* I am in FM mode.  For now, I am just looking for anything!  OK,
here is the new ham silly question:  What is a "main" versus "sub" band?  Is
this the same as side band (upper/lower) being the "sub" and "main" being
not?

Assuming you have the antenna connected correctly, are you in the right 
mode?   You would want to be in "FM".

Are you looking for a particular repeater, or just looking for anything? 
   Do you know if you are on the main or sub band?
