When I took my Advanced and Extra class license exams, the VE let me use my
talking calculator. However, I had to give it to him so he could inspect it
and make sure it was just a regular calculator that talked. We didn't have
laptops back when I took my exams, but I am certain the VE would not have
let me use a laptop if I would have had one. If I were the VE, I would not
allow anyone to use their laptop. I also think the exams are ... hmm, I'll
just say different now than they were, and so, I don't think you need to be
all that concerned about any difficult math on the exam.

There was a day when the math got pretty complicated and you were even
required to, literally, draw out the schematic diagrams for various types of
circuits, e.g. different types of oscillators, RF amplifiers, power
supplies, etc., but those days have been long gone for a long time.

I'm a ve and my take on using the Windows calc is that because it would be
impossible (or nearly so) to insure that there were no stored answers in
there and no other test answers stored on the compute I would not only
disallow the calc but also the computer for any reason. However, you might
get a ve to supply a computer themselves if you absolutely had to have it
for the test.

There's really no extremely difficulot math for the tech test. The extra is
a bit different but since the question pool is out there and you can see the
answers before the test it shouldn't really be much of a problem.

If you can get your hands on a plain talking calculator it will be pretty
easy for one of your ves to insure it is clear in memory and that would work
well for you. It would also avoid a lot of tech that is necessary with a
computer.
