Jim,

I'm sure there's a way to control individual dots, but it's probably at the 
driver level.  I susp0ect you'll have a hard time getting anyone to tell you 
how it's done, but I don't really know that for sure.  Unfortunately, I 
don't know how to do it, or I'd gladly tell you.  Good luck with what sounds 
like an interesting and challenging project.
