Dave:

As I understand it, each section can handle their W1AW operation as they see
fit. This means that the procedure varies.

In Michigan, the first time around, our designated coordinator put out a
call for volunteers for several weeks. He had a spreadsheet attached where
you could sign up for your preferred slots.

I believe his callout was limited to ARRL members and those like myself who
have some sort of an official position with the League. I'm an assistant
EC, and a certified Volunteer examiner.

I can't be totally sure on that latter point, but I think this was how they
came up with their initial volunteer recruitment list, at least here in
Michigan.

We have a different coordinator for our second go-round in October, and I'm
not quite sure how that will work yet. Hopefully, the new coordinator will
open things up to us all, at least initially.

Subject: W1AW - How Do They Do It?

I'm just curious how the W1AW portable operation works. Can anyone in a
state or possession with a suitable station apply to operate as W1AW for a
block of time? Is a suitable station found then time blocks made available
for hams in the area to use? I can't believe W1AW travels with portable
stations to the various states.
