I haven't tried on phone, but the 1 2 3 keys are the memory keyers.
Press and hold until you hear a beep.
Then send what you want, until you hear another beep.  That is the end of 
the e memory.  The radio won't transmit while you are recording, but their 
is a slight keying delay.  This means you get to practice making memories a 
few times.
