There were so many display failures in the early models of 
that radio, that Kenwood replaced the display free of charge 
until a short time after the rig was out of production. They 
actually replaced the entire control head assembly.

They replaced mine not long before I sold the radio and 
bought a TMV71. That was 6 years ago, and the guy who bought 
my 7"A is still using it.

If you get really lucky, you may be able to rescue a working 
display from a dead radio, but buying the one you located is 
the quickest way to do it.

Keep in mind, however, that a fully functional TMV7A won't 
bring much more than the cost of that new display on the 
used market. Of course, that's still less than half the cost 
of a new TMV71A and VGS1.
