Mike,
I believe that isopropyl alcohol is the product of choice and should 
be available from most pharmacies.  You do not want to put any oil on 
the wheel - anything between the roller and the coil will interfere 
with obtaining a good connection.  Rub the inductor down well with 
the alcohol - clean down between the turns as well since the roller 
goes down the sides of the inductor, if you understand what I am saying.
Also clean the slot in the roller that contacts the coil as well as 
the rod on which the roller rides.  I think it will all become 
obvious once you get the cover off.
