I suspect this tyt mobile is very similar, if not exactly the same as the
wouxun 950P...the 950p receives AM just fine on 11m, but like you say, only
transmits FM...even when in AM receive mode, as soon as you transmit, it
transmits in FM.
There is no modification to make it transmit AM because the entire radio is
processor controlled and an AM transmit section would basically require the
entire radio to be redesigned.
unless the radio is design from the ground up to transmit am and SSB which
the 5555 is.
Why don't you look around for a used IC706 mark IIg...they can be had
usually for around 400 bucks these days and then you'd have all the bands
you want with full all mode capability...very easy to modify one of those as
well to transmit outside the ham bands.
they also have a removable head so mounting options are better in a smaller
vehicle.
When these guys say they'll put the 11m AM channels in for you, they are
telling you they'll program them so you can receive on them but don't expect
to transmit unless the radio was specifically designed to transmit on AM
which all of the quad band mobiles are not.
