Sometimes the converted characters appear because someone quotes some HTML
information, from a web page or manual, as part of the body, and then this
gets passed around a couple of times.

Hi Eric.

I didn't see the odd characters in my message, so my theory isn't valid. If
they did appear, I could think of two possibilities. 1. The email server
for this list handles imap different than pop, and B. the message was being
sent as an html message rather than plain text. Neither was the case for my
note, so I don't know what's wrong.

Wish I could help more.
