As I stated

There is a setting within the K3 menu whereby you can set the transmit
output power for the K3 in bare foot mode, and when the KPA500 is put into
"operate" the power of the K3 as a driver is then put into the "driver"
mode.
A very clever facility!

Even more clever is that if the drive power or antenna match is poor, then
the amplifier puts itself into a default mode.
