Mary..here I am in deep woods Mississippi; and Im in a time warp with
Montclair N.J....yes its true.
. if you go to the bank on Valley and cooper; look directly across the street;
thats where the Acme was;
the entire; perhaps minus the florist. the entire facade was ACME going to
the rear of the building forget
archivsts visit my Aunt Jo at 383 Park street; now there is a museum; nothing
in that house has been
toucued since 1958; ala Mrs Havershom; hell ; she still has the silver the
family threw down the well ( da N'awlins well)
so the yankees wouldn't get it ....the real story..should you accept this
asignment...is to document BONDS..
.the car culture unique headquarters for the 50's and sixties...every 40
something knows Bonds.
.document Bonds.and never look back...oh yes Kings super market (valley and
clairmont ???)
is still there and was the rival and poor sister to Acme....A P orginally
was on Bellview where Purvis and sons are ??
then moved to the location of Valley and sumit I think its apts
now...into a huge location that eventualy killed
Acme however Im sure there is a Acme or was in Harlem or Tenth Ave until
early 90's...you have to remember
it was the 60's...alzimers....love and rock & roll or was it the other way
around..should you want to know
other details of that very special place in that very special time let me
know....it was a time when you could go
the entire lenghth of Montclair through back yards as a kid.and camp out at
the Van Vleck estate or the quarry;...
..and hear stories about the shaman who built a tree house up in eagle rock
(over looking N>YC ) as a recluse
and expert in oriental carpets; and other such nonsence.... best of Luck...
Ps my uncle Al who I will visit in June.
..Knows Montclair and especially Newark;..... cheers Michael
