Backing off the mic gain is definitely one of my next steps.
Will probably back it down to 40 or so, and see what happens.
I also could write to the guy I bought the amp from, to see if it has a
grid-protection circuit.

Tom,
I'm guessing that "GOP" stands for grid over-current protection. Since you
got the amp used, you might have such a board installed, in which case, your
relay would trip if grid current exceeded what it's supposed to be. This
may mean that backing off your Mic gain to the point where your AGC isn't in
the red all the time will fix the problem.
