In the text question below, I am not familiar with the TS590 menu settings.

That aside, I am assuming he has a GOP board installed. If so, the GOP will 
trip on peaks over 193 mA.

Something is causing peak current to exceed 193 mA, or he could have a bad 
meter protection diode causing the grid meter to be wrong.

He does have that board installed??

Why not use a tone oscillator that lets you hear the grid current? It would 
be pretty easy to use the ALC jack for that output if you have an external 
oscillator. The grid meter is 0.3 volts full scale at 200 mA.
