Hi Tom,
Do you have narrator set up or do you have NVDA? The update screen
doesn't work with any screen reader, but using NVDA, (and maybe
narrator) you should be able to open up the Preferences as I mentioned
in a post yesterday and uncheck the check for updates at start up checkbox.
