Another way of achieving the knob position is to note the frequency, turn
knob to the six o'clock position, and then direct enter the frequency either
on the rig or the computer keypad.

Hi Tom,
I agree that some practice will be a very good thing. I think that with the
number of folk calling, you could even start on split, but practising moving
from simplex to split will stand you in good stead.
Something you could try, is to set the finger dimple in the tuning knob to a
known position. Let me explain. If I operate split on SSB, I guess the
usual split is 5 kilohertz up. With the rig correctly setup for split
operation, I lock the rig and rotate the tuning dial until it is at the
bottom, in the 6 o'clock position. I then unlock the rig. This means I can
then easily tune between 5 and 10 up, purely by touch, and I can immediately
get back to the 5 up position, without having to listen to any output from
the rig. This works if you are running the frequency or just calling in.
My main type of operating is S&P DX, and nearly all CW DX contacts are
working split. They will probably be listening between 1 and 3 kilohertz
up, and if I have the finger dimple set at the 6 o'clock position, I can
easily turn the dial between the 6 and 9 o'clock positions, and know I'm
transmitting in the right area!
Hopefully, you can just use 5 up, and there will be no need to ask the
callers to spread out!

Agreed, Kelvin, which is why I'm going to try to operate split.
I always worry that doing so might discourage those who wish to contact me
and have never done split, but I'm hoping that by the time February 22 comes
around, those who are interested in working all of the states will have
figured out how to do it on their particular rigs.

Hi Tom,
So far, the W1AW stations have been straightforward to work from the UK, and
I've seen a mixture of simplex and split. I always prefer to find a busy
station working Split, so I can clearly hear them! It's not so bad when you
can't hear any locals calling, such as on the higher bands, but on 40, I
would think your signal would be lost among the very strong nearby callers,
if you work simplex.

Thanks for sending this along, David.
If anyone is interested, I have volunteered to represent Michigan on
Saturday: February 22 from 4 - 6 p.m. Eastern (2100 - 2300 Z) on 40 meter
SSB.
I may do more, but didn't want to volunteer for too much the first time
around, in case I run into issues with A C log and ADIF file conversion.
If things work out well, and I can volunteer for more operating time during
the first go-around, I will definitely let everyone know.
On a related note, I'm getting the impression that split frequency operating
is the preferred way to go for this event, given the large pileups that
folks are having. Fortunately, that seems quite easy to do with the TS590.
