For some modes it is also possible to have nothing copiable because you are 
trying to receive on the wrong sideband.  Maybe you can describe the 
conventions that people use a little bit.

John,

Try  setting the filter bandwidth as narrow as possible and tune slowly
across the signal.   Since you aren't trying to transmit, and only
decode,  set your radio to FSK orRTTY mode if availible.   Depending on
your radio, you may be able to get narrower bandwidth that way.  You can
try either using the jaws cursor to read what is in the rx window, or
toggle alt-s to "all" and see if that gives you good copy of incoming text.

You may also want to  go high in whatever band  and try and get  a
"lone" signal to try and copy instead of  trying to sort out a bunch  in
the middle of a  pile.
