get the hampod.  the morse interface for the kx3 isn't quite there yet. 
Also, you lose some troubleshooting aids like the alternate displays.
YOu also get full access to all menus etc.

having the hampod also gives a little easier (more intuitive) direct freq 
entry.
I really like mine.

checked into the blind hams 20 meter net on the 1st with the kx3 and the 
alexloop magnetic loop antenna.  whole station sitting in my livingroom and 
worked fine.

Good luck with the kx3.
Get the kx3 morse interface description document from the elecraft site. 
This also provides a good description of the controls and connectors on the 
rig.
