Hi Fred,

I used to own an Ameritron ALS600. I owned it for over three years and had
absolutely no problem with it. All solid state amps must work in to a low S
W R. Some amps have a builtin tuner, but the ALS600 and the ALS1300 do not.

My only complaint about the ALS600 was that I had a hard time getting 600
watts out of the amp. I could get 550 watts out with out a problem. One
thing that I've always done is that I do not use alc to reduce the drive on
the amp. I turn down the exciter power manually cause I trust that method
more than I trust the ALC method which I've seen post after post on about
ALC power spikes.

When the ALS1300 came out, I sold my ALS 600 and upgraded to the als1300. I
got one of the first units and it gave me an initial problem which Ameritron
fixed under warrantee including free shipping both ways. I haven't had a
problem with the als1300 since I got it back.

Allen, thanks much. I am thinking that I might want to forget the ALS-600.
I have owned lots of amplifiers over the years but I am not using one at
present and I might just forget getting another one. Thanks for your
response.

I have had an ALS600 for about a year, but it was mostly a backup amp.
During the year that I had it, it got very little use. About a month ago,
I discovered that it had lost all output. Until it went south, it would
put out about 550 watts. It turned out that I had blown the finals, which
was somewhat surprising to me as it was feeding an antenna that had a SWR
of less than 1.1 to 1. The repair bill came to about $400 not including
shipping.

Since I knew that the amp had never been abused, I decided that I didn't
want it around anymore so I sold it for $700. My experience with it leads
me to believe that it was too finicky, not suitable for even a backup.

If you have any further questions, just drop me a private email. My email
address is good on qrz.com

I believe some of you guys are using or have used the ALS-600 amplifier and
I would appreciate any info you could give me on it. I have heard that it
shuts down with the slightest SWR, is this correct? Also, about what how
much power does it put out. I will appreciate any info good or bad as I
may be interested in one. Also price estimate new and used if you know.
Can the top section set on top of the power supply and is it very blind
user friendly? Thanks much for any info.
