I also use Thunderbird, but can't comment on the gmail thing since I 
don't use it.  I'm far from a power user of Thunderbird, but it suits my 
needs on Win 7 for the past 3 years.   Never had any JAWS issues, up to 
and including version 14.

  Since software marches on, I'm not sure if this tutorial is out of 
date,  but the one from  blindcooltech.com helped me get up and running 
with Thunderbird.

There is also a tutorial  on blindcooltech for  Windows Live Mail, which 
is  in Windows 7, but  it didn't exist at the time I was going to  that 
OS.   Maybe that is another option for you.
