Jerry,
Regarding your QRP operation, when I was in high school, I built a little
QRP rig for my science class and the Science Fair. I remember that little
rig and every part in it, like I built it yesterday. I had more fun working
DX on that little rig. What a kick it was to have a station come back to me,
any station, but especially in the middle of the night working Japan or
Australia, or Italy on CW, running only about 3 watts on 40 meters with a
14AVQ vertical antenna. I have owned lots of rigs since those early days,
but I don't remember any of them like that little home-brew, QRP rig!
Oh, BTW: I earned a grade of "A" on my science class project and won 1st
place in my category in the Science Fair. Building the little QRP rig was
the fun and easy part; the harder part was having to write up and explain
how each part worked and how it functioned in the rig. However, that is sure
a good way of really learning the application of basic electronics! <Smile>
