Howard,

I'm guessing, but I think they recorded the instrumental track, slowed it 
down to half speed, and mixed David's voice (recorded at normal speed, of 
course).  Once the mixing was done, they could speed everything back up, 
which would make the instrumental track play normally while altering David's 
voice.  Today, this whole process could be done very easily with digital 
software.
