That's not as strange as it seems.  It's a classic case of someone producing 
a file in a later version of Word and renaming it rather than doing a "save 
as" to get it into the right format for Office 2003.  The converter is smart 
enough to determine the file type by looking at the headers rather than the 
file extension, but it choked when it ran into a file with a DOC extension 
and a DOCX format.  I'm amazed at how many people think they can "convert" a 
file just by renaming it.
