Below are the information I got from Chicago Public Schools regarding the
need for teachers from other nations. Please pass this information to those
who are interested so that they can apply as soon as possible. I wish us all

CPS. Fills Critical Teacher Through a Partnership with the U.S· Labor
Department and US Immigration and Naturalization
December 21, 1999 -- Through partnership with the U.S. Labor Department and
the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Services, Chicago Public Schools
plans to address the existing and predicted teacher shortages. The two
federal agencies have agreed to issue temporary visas and work permits to,
outstanding teacher candidates from other nations in the areas where CPS is
now experiencing shortages or expecting shortages in near future. The
critical needs areas include:
Mathematics
Computer Science
Science:
Biology
Physics
Chemistry
Earth Science
World Languages:
Bilingual Education
School Counselors
Mental Health professional
The standards of the program are:
Chicago Public Schools will recruit qualified foreign nationals. Special
efforts will he directed at those who are attending school in the US, on
student visas. Prospective teacher candidates must be perfectly convergent
and fluent in English to qualify.
INS will provide 50 HI -B temporary visas each year to allow selected
teachers to work in Chicago Public Schools. The Labor Department will approve
work certificates for qualified teaching applicants.
CPS will provide six weeks of orientation and training for the new teachers
and give them lodging and a stipend during the training period. Once they are
assigned to teaching positions, the school system will allow them to borrow
up to three (3) months salary (to be paid back the first year) for various
transference and residence fees.
CPS will apply to the State of Illinois for temporary reaching certificates
for all approved applicants. Candidates will be expected to complete all
requirements for receiving a regular Illinois teaching certificate within
four years or being hired by the reboot system.
The temporary visas issued by INS are good for up to six years. Under this
program, CPS will serve as the sponsor fm the participants. At the end of
their first, fourth and fifth years of service, the school system will decide
whether to continue sponsorship At the end of the six years, CPS may sponsor
participants in the program for a permanent visa.
Candidates should rend resume and a letter no later than Wednesday, January
14, 2000, which includes the following information:
1. Teaching Experience
2. Why they want to teach for the Chicago Public Schools
3. Address & phone number (both School & permanent)
4. E-mail address
