Subject: [BLIND-X] Grocery Shopping Online with WalMart
In recent years, we have had a problem getting our grocery shopping done in
a timely manner. Sandy and I have to adult children living near us. With
their own families, and jobs and busy schedules, even though they have to
grocery shop for their own families, they have a tendency to forget mom and
dad need to eat, too. That logic of that last statement, although true,
defies explanation but it is just another part of being blind and getting
old I suppose. Plus, I cannot lift things like I used to because of my
spinal surgeries and procedures over the last six years. We have some
miniature Dachshunds, ranging from 8 pounds to 12 pounds and a standard
sized dachshund that is about 17 pounds and anything over ten pounds I have
to be very careful when lifting. Sandy asked me, for example, to take the
trash from the trash compacter out today, and I was beginning to wonder if I
should have been pulling that bag out or not when I discovered I'd let it go
too long before emptying it sooner. It was probably 15 or 16 pounds, maybe
even more, but I made it out to the trash barrels but my lower back has been
complaining about my actions the rest of today. Anyhow, we have a local
store called King Soopers which is apart of the Kroger chain out east and
they still deliver and we used them to have our groceries delivered when our
kids were young. Back then, they rarely got a single order right and they
have stricter requirements for delivery, plus they charge more, than
WalMart. Sandy, about a year ago, got a Mac Book Air computer and after a
few Apple in-store lessons, plus with help from blind mailing lists for mac
users, she has taught herself the mac system verses her windows computer
which she rarely uses now. We both have used iPhones by apple since we got
our first ones which were the I4 models. I have a I6 now and Sandy has the
I5S but she also has a iPad mini. She pays all the bills using the iPhone.
Anyhow, she got to playing around on the WalMart website and figured out how
to order groceries. She uses the Schwans website to order, too, but she
used her Mac Book Air to do this first WalMart order. We sent the order
through Wednesday night and it was to be delivered between noon and 2 Pm the
next day, but at 8:30 this morning, they called and wanted to know if they
could bring it out. They charged 8 dollars for delivery and the order was
100 percent exact with no mistakes. As a diabetic, I watch my carbohydrate
intake so the KNFB app for the later iPhones works great on just about
everything I've tried it on. I downloaded the app called "Be My Eyes" which
allows volunteers to see through your own iPhone camera so you can have
things read, and described, by sighted people. I know blind people using it
and they say it works great. I haven't tried it out yet . It's free so why
not download it in case you need it for even something like groceries.
Anyhow, I know most of you probably know about all this but in case not,
there you go and here I go.
Phil.
