I had googled my problem and saw it was common. I tried replacing the
keyboard, no change.
Most other repair suggestions used the xp cd to the recovery(or repair?)
console. Still haven't found my cd.
One site said hit the F8 key when booting which I did and got a "select
boot device" box listing all drives. When I select the drive with xp, it
starts up normally. This makes me wonder if its the boot file that's
corrupted.

I got into safe mode with console and tried one suggestion of typing
"bootcfg /repair" but wasn't a recognized command. when the console opened,
the curser was at the end of a line directing to documents and settings.
Should I preface the above with a prompt to the C drive it's on? If so,
what is the actual command? And the bootcfg /repair command I found online
was actually used with the cd's repair console. Will it even work in the
safe mode command console?

At least I'm able to boot up xp now but would like to be able to fix what's
broken.
