Java is also used for interactive web content, such as webinars, online
training, etc. our online training at work uses java extensively, but it is
not necessary for most every day tasks. Also, Java and Javascript are 2
entirely different things.

Java is used by some shopping carts and lets people animate pages. You
don't
need it for most things.
