Gee, you people were lucky to have all that modern gear.  I started with a 
Heath A T 1.  An S X 99 and a tuner in a wooden box someone gave me which I 
did not know how to use without any meters which I couldn't read anyway. 
That was in 59 which I was KN7JVF and my first QSL card was from the F C C 
colored pink.  Scared the s--t out of me. Then I got my extra in about 62 or 
so.  73
