Albert, the 590 has its own keyer I am sure, so plug the paddle in to the 
right jack.
If it is like the 480, they are two keying jacks, one for the keyer, and the 
other for a bug or paddle.
If the external keyer is working properly, the cord goes in to the key jack, 
not the paddle jack.
