A little more poking around and it seems that any program where I have
changed"spell alphanumeric data" from the default "off" to either "spell" or
"spell phonetically", throws in the extra letter at the end.

I keep my ham software set to "spell phonetically", but even  making the
change in notepad or thunderbird will cause it to happen.
