Ron,

You're correct that both the 480 and 590 are nice radios, but after having 
owned both, I'd recommend the 590 if you can swing it.  There's a bit more 
speech feedback, and both the receive and transmit specs are a little 
better.  I don't do much CW so I can't comment on that, but for SSB and AM, 
the transmit audio on the 590 is superior, especially if you want good low 
end and decent highs.  I'm not speaking of vast differences, but enough so 
you could be frustrated if you didn't make the right choice.
