Yeah, I know, radials are something else!
I have a friend on this list, and he use to live up north and had a hygain ground mounted verticle, and I don't think it had any radials on it. It worked on 10 through 40, but not on 80!
He was in a moble home park, and there was just not enough room for those darn radials!
In one of the handiham weekly eletters, Pat, wa0TDA, had an article about getting on hf, and he mentions a 43 foot verticle, made by ldg, (I didn't even know they made verticles!), which needs no radials!
I never used it, but that would be awesome if it is true!
Well, you keep us out here informed on how that progress is going for antennas there!

I have the hustler 5BTV which works on 10, 15, 20, 40 and 75 meters. I have
the add on for 17 as well but had trouble with it, got the antenna working
without it and have cleaned it up and am ready to try it again I just

It claims it will work without radials but I tried it without just to get it
tuned and the swr was off the chart on 40 and 75 so I put some radials down,
set it back where it was marked for when I got it and I only had to adjust
one band a little bit and everything fell right in great. I only have 15
radials down now and will be doubling that at least come fall but for now it
works, the only band I don't do much on is 10 meters and being 6 feet from a
metal building and 10 feet from a metal shed, I'm surprised the swr is good
but it's perfect. Ground mounting doesn't help either for 10 meters which
only uses the bottom portion of the antenna but that's alright, I have a 102
inch whip on the railing to use on 10 meters and I hope to get that up on
the metal side of the house when this heat wave ends here. No vertical that
I know of really works without radials with the exception of some CB
antennas people use for 10 meters through 17 or 20 but for the ground
mounted and multiband verticals, I don't know anyone who's made one work
with no radials and the more the better. I'm thinking 30 will be enough for
me and as many as I can realistically put down. It would have been fun where
I used to live though with the swamp out back, and in wet lands, I don't
think radials would have been needed there. Here they are though but it
plays pretty well right now as is.
