My office comes up for election only in presidential years. I was
elected in 2004, re-elected in 2008, and my next one will be in 2012.

Let me tell you a little about my county's political coloration.

The 2010 Republican gubernatorial nominee, Rick Snyder, who won
overwhelmingly statewide, is a local guy.

He's popular here, and his "tough nerd" image is the sort of thing
that resonates with the nerd community. Ann Arbor is practically the
Nerd Capital of Michigan.

His statewide campaign headquarters was two blocks from where I sit.

Moreover, the Democratic candidate was ... well, I'll just say he
didn't come across very well, and his campaign was inept to the bone.

And just everywhere in 2010, the baseline Republican vote was the
highest we had seen in years. That effect was driven (IMHO) by the
economy, and our state's economy is way worse than the national
average.

Despite all those powerful advantages, and an extremely weak opponent,
Snyder lost his home county by several thousand votes!

This used to be one of the most Republican counties in Michigan.
Given four opportunities, it never voted for FDR.

But nowadays, notwithstanding my eccentricities, I don't think I could
lose to a Republican.

It's the Democratic primary that I have to worry about.
