it sounds like  you get a lot of temperature inversions where you can hear 
repeaters some distance away and the next day you don't hear them at all. 
The 146.520 frequency is a simplex frequency and if memory serves me 
correctly, Naples is about 70 miles from Tampa so you'll be able to receive 
much better than you can transmit.  The other thing you need to bear in mind 
is that Condos are notoriously  noisy locations due to local man made 
interference from mixers, vacuum cleaners and other motorize appliances. 
Normal range for an ht is about 2 miles or so and maybe 30 miles or so 
through a repeater.  You eventually might need a magmount antenna on your 
filing cabinet or refrigerator and a 50 watt mobile to consistently hit 
those Naples repeaters.  At this location in Frostburg, I'm at 2100 feet 
above sea level and have an omnidirectional antenna at 70 feet up in the 
air.  My mobile gives me a 60 mile range on simplex and I can hit repeaters 
in Rockville, Maryland near the d.c. area about 100 miles away.  Can you 
imagine what kind of fund I'd have with a 14-element beam?
