This could also be something more serious, like the power supply shutting down.
Some monitors may have high limit protection that shuts down the power supply if
the high voltage gets too high. This is to prevent excessive X-ray emmission in
the event of a regulator failure.

At least the switch itself is easy to check with a continuity tester or
ohmmeter, but exercise caution when opening the monitor as high voltage may
remain for some time until discharged. Also be careful not to disturb anything
since the adjustments on modern monitors are very sensitive.
