You have to remember, the vx 8 and whatever were meant as ham transceivers 
first and formost so obviously they'll do that better than short wave 
receive. The vr-500 is as far as I know, an actual short wave receiver so 
that in itself means it better be better. I don't know many people who've 
kept that series of yaesu Ht's very long due to the difficulty in using them 
and I haven't really played with them.
