Ron,
I suspect that your receiver wants an A M loop antenna. I believe
that Radio Shack would sell you one. Most of the examples of such
receivers I have owned won't work with a random length of wire. The
loop would connect with one of its two wires to the antenna
connection and the other to the ground connection.
And as people have said, A M broadcasting is done with vertical antennaes.
